Chapter 1
Hi! My names Ginny, Ginny McThomas and my life has been a mixture of good times and bad times. The Good times seems to have arrived in spades, when my mum and dad won the British lottery and found themselves worth ten million pounds sterling or in American terms almost twenty million dollars, they decided to move to the US for an extended stay and explore that country.
That is when the bad times started.
Not long after we arrived, and just after my sixteenth birthday, we were involved in a plane crash. Mom and dad were killed and I spent the next few weeks in hospital and got involved in a struggle with social services. They wanted to put me in a foster home and take over the running of my inheritance. I fought this and got the British Embassy and a good lawyer involved. The Embassy pointed out that I was a British citizen and therefore did not come under their jurisdiction. It was also pointed out to them that since I was a Scot, the legal age for independence in Scotland was sixteen and therefore I was my own man entitled under Scots law to make my own decisions about my future and about my inheritance.
Since my Father had invested the money wisely, I had no real decisions to make about this. I only had to realise some of the investments to pay the death duties, and these were a lot less than they might have been since my father had designated that I had a third share in his lottery win and no tax would be due on this. The other two shares had gone to him and my mother. Further since quite a bit of these were invested where the British Government could not get their hands on any part of them, this again lessened the tax burden. So when I got out of hospital, I found myself an orphan and a rich young man.
Since we had set up home in a small town in California I decided and got permission to stay put and to continue my education in the States, as for some reason I had always wanted to go to Stanford University.
At this point I should probably tell you something about myself. I am what was known in my country as a gifted child and soaked up languages like a sponge being fluent in French, Spanish and Italian. In other words I was very bright. But this did not cause me any angst of the kind that brainy children seemed to encounter within some of the US schools. I am not very tall, average height around 5ft. 8in. I was however, very fit as I ran every day and lifted weights. Further more I was a martial arts black belt second Dan and did not have to take shit from any one. But fortunately part of my training was about meditation and self control and being sort of laid back I preferred to try and defuse situations rather than get involved in force.
Thus at the start of the new school year I enrolled in the local high school set in a very prosperous neighbourhood and began my Junior year. It became quickly obvious that I was regarded as a geek and since I knew no one very well was somewhat Isolated. This did not bother me greatly for I was an only child and used to my own company I had a few close friends back home but being rather shy had never been one who sought to draw attention to himself.
It also became apparent that those kids around me who were very bright were also isolated and subjected to a degree of harassment particularly from the jocks and the rich set. There was one girl in who shared most of my classes that stood out for me. She was about five seven and if you looked closely you could see that despite her lack of fashion consciousness, she had a body to die for, with tits that must have been at least a c cup and legs that were long and slender. I only knew this last part because I had seen her in the pool as she usually dressed in sweatshirts and pants. Her name was Virginia McKenzie and maybe it was that made me notice her, a good Scottish name. She drove a range rover and seemed to be a natural for the rich set, but she was the brain of the year, seemed standoffish and to prefer her own company as she ate alone and did not seek out others. In fact in the few weeks that I took to settle in it seemed to me that despite her intelligence and her family's social standing she was one unhappy girl.
On the particular day that I decided to try and get to know her better she had been subject to a degree of harassment from her social peers and when she got to her usual solitary table in the dining hall seemed to about ready to burst into tears. This I felt was the ideal opportunity for me to make a move and I picked up my food and headed for her table.
Chapter 2
I walked over to her table and stood before her, "Hi" I said, "Do you mind if I sit here,"
He looked up at me in surprise,
"Why" she asked.
"Why what" I replied.
"Why would you want to sit here"
"Well" I said," You have to be the brainiest woman I have ever met so it would be nice to get to know someone like you, and then when you are rich and famous for some breakthrough you have made in science or whatever, I'll be able to say I knew her when she was at school and knew she would go far."
That got a bit of a smile from her
"Having a brain is not all its cracked up to be, right now I would swap it for good looks like my mum, instead of being clever and dowdy" Was her rejoinder.
That gave me another opening, and I don't think she was fishing for compliments. She actually believed what she was saying.
"You've got to be joking ," I said. "You have gorgeous red hair, beautiful green eyes, a pert little nose and very kissable lips. Besides I have seen you in the pool and I bet you're at least a c cup, with a waist and a butt to die for and last but not least legs that seem to go on for ever."
She looked at me as if I was daft.
"Well if I was like you describe, surely I would have boys flocking to ask me out. The truth is I am dowdy and fat and no one wants a fat brain box. Didn't you notice how guys treated me on the way into the dining hall "
By this time is was sitting down opposite her.
"Yeah, but they were a bunch of moronic jocks. They can't see past the end of their nose." I told her.
"It seems no one else can either," she replied.
"Well I have" I said, "Because I can see past the packaging and I am a Scot and in Scotland we prize gifted people. Mind you, probably you would have got some hassle for your red hair and been called carrot top or ginger or one or two other names, but I've always had a thing for red heads.
"Well, I would have preferred that to being treated like a computer on legs, or the name calling I get because I am smart. Anyway what do you mean bout the packaging?"
"Well you don't pay a lot of attention to how you look. You tie your hair up in a bun so that it doesn't annoy you. You also hide all your good points under the baggy clothes you wear", I told her. " you probably never notice these things because they don't seem important to you, But you succeed in hiding all the things I said would reveal just what an attractive woman you are. But as I said, I can see past these things and so I think I would like to get to know you a lot better. Besides, I get the feeling that at this point in time, like me, you need a friend. So why don't we just hang out together"
She looked at me in surprise.
"Are you asking me out?"
"I guess I am." I replied
"Well I notice that you are not so dumb yourself," she said, " but if you associate with me, then you really will be placing your self in the geek bracket and this will make you a pariah like me"
"That might happen," I said, "But I would consider that worth the sacrifice. However that doesn't have to be the case. As it happens I have a plan to make sure that is not what happens"
"Like what?" she asked.
"To find the answer to that, Ginny McKenzie, you have to be prepared to take part in the experiment,"
"If I say yes, then where are you offering to take me" she smiled.
"I thought maybe dinner and a movie if that is not to mundane for a couple of eggheads" I replied
"Not to mundane at all" she said," in fact I think I would really enjoy doing something as ordinary as that. When did you have in mind."
"I was thinking that tonight would be as good a time as any. And I hope you like Italian food for I know a nice little restaurant that produces the real Mc Coy."I said.
"I love Italian food" she replied, "but what about the movie"
"You pick" I told her, "And you should know I don't mind a chick flick if that is your taste. I can weep with the best of them."
She laughed, "Then I might put you to the test"
"Good, then I will pick you up at your place. It is not far from my house.
I looked at my watch and found that it was almost time to get ready for our next classes, so I stood up and leaning over the table and knowing that some would have been watching us I gently kissed her cheek and said,
"Lets get rid of these dishes now that we have given people something to talk about."
She had blushed but she rose to the occasion saying,
"Why the hell not."
We placed our trays on the stacking shelves and walked out of the dining hall hand in hand.
